The Plight of +400,000 IDPs

128 villages raided, 92 severely affected, 411,358 displaced

“122 villages raided, 82 severely affected” (published 22 August 2018)

Due to an armed conflict in Cameroon between more than 10 separatist groups and the government defense and security forces (DSF) for close to a year now, the Anglophone Crisis keeps on deteriorating. This conflict has brought untold suffering and migration of civilians across the Anglophone regions with some migrating to Nigeria. What initially started as a peaceful protest in 2016 by teachers and lawyers in the Anglophone Regions is now gradually following the trends of a civil war with heavy casualties on both sides. The civilian population is suffering the most but on one side the government continues leading military operations and on the other side, the armed groups retaliate.

As of 25 August 2018, 411,358 inhabitants of the NW and SW Regions of Cameroon have been displaced internally in the two Anglophone Regions, raising an alarm on a potential humanitarian crisis that may ensue. Of the total IDPs, 269,390 are displaced in the South West Region (SWR) while 141,968 are displaced in the North West Region (NWR). The figures demonstrate the intensity of ongoing armed clashes and arson attacks on private homes. Out of 128 localities affected, 92 are severely touched, where 63 are from the SWR and 29 are from the NWR.

The data and statistics below are estimates of displaced persons and are not intended to be a perfect representation of the situation, as the figures are subject to change. The data below neither includes civilians who have migrated to Nigeria nor includes those who have migrated to the Centre, West and Littoral Regions as a result of conflicts. The data has been analyzed and processed from information CHRDA documented from field visits, victims, witnesses, and third parties.
