On behalf of our community and as Lord Mayor of the Buea Municipality let me express our warm words of welcome to all of you gathered here for this symposium. In this light we expect that this initiative will certainly put in place an integrated and interactive approach towards a breakthrough in our search for a better society that should uphold Human Rights and exercise good governance with the abundance of human and material resources at our disposal.

As it pleases all of you, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, and in welcoming you to BUEA – THE “LEGENDARY HOSPITALITY” let me on behalf of our thanks and encouragement to Mr. Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) and his team, for their continuous efforts in  enhancing the fundamental rules of Human Rights in our society. Mr. Director, your efforts will not go unrewarded. If all who have to stake in this endeavour fail to satisfy the expectations of our Centre, then posterity will certainly not hold us blameless. The activities of this Centre demonstrates your  commitment and attachment to a better society and eloquently translates your desire to foster, promote, protect and consolidate the rights and freedoms of citizens in this great nation as prescribed in the United Nations Charter on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Freedoms.

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are all aware of the hazards and horrors of corruption in our society today, a cankerworm that has become a social scourge in our community and nation as a whole, tearing down what has taken a chunk of the taxpayers sweat to build over the years.

In recent years, there has been a significant change in people’s perspective on the importance of human right, the rule of law and democracy. It is therefore necessary to continue in educating our population on these vital issues which can consolidate a comprehensive development framework essentially regarded as a tool for improving country ownership, people’s participation and donor coordination in development co-operation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, as I welcome you again to this ceremony, I wish to appreciate you for  your concerted efforts in being part of this symposium which I hope will go a long way and reinforce the exercise of Human Rights in our society.Today¨s occasion is a response to an urgency of the moment and calls for our commitment. Let us answer that call. By the grace of God and the wishes of  the people of Buea, we look forward to a great end.

Thank you for your kind attention.
